Accenture Application Day Self Reflection

Hey everyone, May the Fourth be with you! So I made’s a little video which sort of outlines the day I had at Accenture.

So to break it down… I got there way to early so I was sat bricking it a little n Starbucks further into Newcastle with Becca as it was out day off anyways. Then headed back, spotted a few other Sunderland Uni students so I went in with them. Hey to any of you reading this by the way! And I won’t name and shame the late person… haha you know who you are.

Continuing on we had an introduction from Stella the main recruiter woo go Stella ;p, we got split into groups and because there was so many Sunderland students compared to others I knew I’d have at least one. The group activity was manic we had 30 minutes to shout out answers and hope we’d been heard but we did quite well, with some good ideas. To be honest i think we should have patented the idea!

Anyway you’ll have to wait and see to find out how I did!

Learning Python

Hey guys, so as part of my group project for my 2nd year of Computer Forensics we have been creating an app to teach kids coding, we decided to focus on just teaching python so I created a view videos I placed on my SMC# channel first in a while. Here are the three I have uploaded today.

The first is where to download Python and install it there is a little more to it.

This second one focuses on how to create your first .py program (python) and run it, the example uses the print() function

The third one  have done shows how to create basic variables, gain user input and also how to create a custom formatted print string.

Give it a try let me know how you get on or how you thought I did. Any advice is great and as always thanks for watching/reading.

Final Year Module Choices for Computer Forensics

Hey everyone Scott here, Here’s a little video to do with my final year choices whether I get a placement or not.

Speaking of placements got an application day for Accenture really hope I get this one as I’m running out of opportunities. Its at St.James Park easy enough to get to via bus or something rather then attempting to drive through.

Anyway back to my potential choices for my final year, I had intended to do AI this has now been dropped by Computer Forensics which is disappointing to say the least as I really wanted to do it. I could try and ask to see if its still running if I could go on it still. The issue is that I feel like I might embrace the change and see if it gets me somewhere I didn’t think I would go. I enjoy Software Development and would love to be a programmer but if I do the new choices I could end up being an investigator. I don’t know which way I want to go and I throw it out to you guys if you have any suggestions.

On another note I’ve been enjoying all the sun in Sunny Sunderland, the St Peters cafe sells ice lollies! Yay!! Enjoyed a nice day out yesterday after handing in a report spent the day with Becca then went out with her Mum in the afternoon so busy and exciting day! Anyway hopefully keep you up to date on any upcoming stuff! Thanks for reading….Ice Lolly!

Balancing holiday fun with work

Hello everyone Scott here. Hope you had a great Easter!

As you might know I study Computer Forensics and do the software development side of the second year and I have had to try and balance my University work with actual part time work on the weekends and still try to have fun with my time off.

Quick placement update I have nothing lined up yet unfortunately still waiting to hear from some independent companies so fingers crossed but think I need to go  back on the attack again otherwise it looks like I might not be getting one… so many missed opportunities but oh well I can only try and try.

That being said it is understandable that University work should take priority for example, I had my third software development assignment for over the holidays due in on the 20th of April. I tired to do this in the first week although I had issues with certain parts I got it finished. Then I did my Computer Forensics report rewrite as I wanted to change it entirely as it was badly structured. At the same time i really wanna just play video games and enjoy the sun we’ve had. Now I’m in my last week of the holidays already… where did the days go… anyway I still have my group project to work on although I made a massive effort to tear most of that apart last week and have almost finished what I had allocated. The issue is that not everyone is available at the same time during these holidays, one member has gone back home which has made communication awkward but we are still plodding on.

I still have some reflection work to do for the group project and for Computer Forensics. The forensics ones just need a good rewrite. At the end of the day though the 3 weeks looked like there was enough time to get everything done but fun and excitement has takeover and what I planned to do in the first week didn’t get done for various reasons. My advice is to plan and organise but at the same time you need to have fun! All work and no play makes Scott a dull boy >.<

Anyway enjoy your time off and live your life! I’m gonna go play bye!

Video Interviewing Advice

Hey guys so today I did my video style interview with Accenture. I have done this once before when I did the Microsoft Interview and the idea was the same except on this one you had 3 minutes instead of 2 but it was hard to fill the time in some cases. Here is my advice on selling yourself on these interviews:

Problem Solving A Developers Best Tool

Hey everyone a little video here to show a little bit of my Assignment 3 work with some little tips for Asp.Net C# Webforms:

Problem Solving is a key aspect of software development as most programs and software is created to solve a problem but inevitably something will go wrong and it will need to be debugged… a programmers best friend. I debug others work better then my own.

But I am proud to say that when a tutor came to ask my tutor advice for fixing a students problem he actually pointed to me and said I was the man for the job. That made me feel really good as I am sure programming is what I want to do so it kind of reaffirmed it for me in a way. Thanks for reading and if you have a problem make sure to message me on facebook especially if your a mate watching this although I can’t give you the answers as that would be cheating/plagiarizing but I can help debug issues ^.^

First Computing Society for University of Sunderland

Hey guys a little video here to check in and let you know about the new Computing Society that’s being created!

I can confirm that the time, day and place is correct in the video so hope to see people there!

Oh and here’s a little extra story for ya. So I applied for IBM and I believe I mentioned previously that I had an online appitude test to take. Optimistically I thought meh how hard could it be. Well… ouch was I wrong, the first so many questions were patterns in which you had to figure it out some were really hard like: 1, 1, 4, 5/7 – 50 1254 and I was like .. what the … Then the next set of questions came… Even more maths but these were easier as it was like if this printer is 25% faster then the other how many more pages can it print out of a 1000 page workload or something like that. I laughed it off thinking well thats terrible goodbye IBM possibility… The next day I got an email saying I’ve been put through to the application day and passed the minimum score required. So it just goes to show that you have to be a little bit more optimistic!

Hands on with Mobile Forensics

Mobile Forensics

Today we had a guest lecturer representing Cellbrite Mobile Forensics and unfortunately I am sorry but I have forgotten his name. We got a great and interesting lecture we learned a great deal about how the memory works in a mobile phone and how flash memory saves/writes/etc. so as to see what the best method of extracting the data will be.

After this we got totally hands on which is great, a friend of mine pointed out that the course is called “Principles” of Computer Forensics so you might not expect to get down and dirty but it’s always great when you do. We were given some old Motorola handsets the L7 SILVR shown here:

The phone might be old but it was a useful test phone  for the kit we were using which were Cellbrite Touch’s not sure if it was the Ultimate or older version. Great machines very useful, it was running Windows XP with a little bit of knowledge but easy to use interface it was simple to get the data off. Then we had some fun playing round with some pre-made images of phones and had a laugh about a one that obviously thought his phone was wiped …wrong! Lol good laughs all round anyway. It was definitely a worthwhile experience the only downside is we didn’t have a break and it lasted 3 and half hours but it was great fun so it was worth it.

Placement Update:

So I ended up down to just 3 potentials left… D.W.P which might not even be happening (they haven’t responded regarding my application yet, Microsoft (in London)and Accenture (Newcastle). I have been unsuccessful with Clicksco, G.E was full, HP’s placement was unsuitable after all. Although I have had a few unsuccessful applications, it is important to NEVER GIVE UP! Something better will come around I’m sure (especially when I least expect it!) Because of these applications, I had decided to apply to some more, and I have been put through for an IBM placement (even though I only sent the application off TWO DAYS AGO!!) and have been given an online test which I will be completing very soon, so I’ll try to keep you guys updated!

If you guys are thinking of doing a placement year, then Rate My Placement is a great source  so check it out!

Speak soon guys

Cyber Attack News: Dark times on the web?

There are currently so many different attacks and problems going on at the moment on the internet in the world of Cyber Crime.

Firstly there has been an advancement with ransom-ware. Ransom-ware is a virus that infects a system and encrypts data on the computer/data platform and then ransoms the files/data. The newest development is that new versions of the virus attacks the save files of games and encrypts them to ransom being able to play the game or not. I’m glad this hasn’t happened to me as I’d hate to lose or not be able to play my games and having to start again but at the same time I wouldn’t pay for it back >.>

It targets very popular games such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Minecraft for example I believe this has become a bigger issue due to the development of bitcoins as an online currency. Bitcoin is software that is created by algorithms made by a Japanese man named Satoshi Nakamoto and I must admit I don’t really get the idea but there is a limit of 21 million  bitcoins in some way maybe set like a constant. Anyway its definitely an interesting subject but it seems that most ransom-ware asks for this new currency as it cannot truly be traced so it may even be used for money laundering.

BBC Error

Another thing that happened today was with the BBC website being reported as a “server error” supposedly  as a result of Jeremy Clarkson’s departure from the tv show Top Gear. Although only down for about 1 hour, people were unable to access I player, BBC news, and BBC sport, and many believe it to be the work of hackers whom threatened on Twitter to crash the system.

Personally, I find the clown that appeared on the page to be very creepy!

Other than this, there is not many new things to report with myself because I am busy busy busy working on uni assignments, and applying to placements so keep safe and please be careful when on the internet!!
