Our Hackathon Ideas

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015

Hey everyone here’s a little insight into what we have to do, sort of and what ideas we have for the Hackathon that the University of Sunderland has been invited to.

I must mention that I volunteered to be team leader so if we lose its the teasm fault not mine… anyway joking aside I’d also like to mention for those who read one of the Facebook posts I left about a week ago. My Grandad had been in for two major operations in one with a 20% survival rate. Regardless of the odds he is well after having a triple bypass and valve replacements so I am getting into cleaning up mode because hopefully when he can go home he’ll be coming to our house ^.^

Thanks for reading!

Hackathon Ideas

Hey guys, here’s a little update on how things are going!

[youtube id=”f50Fx52s7Yk”]

By the way if you have any good ideas I’d love to hear them for example using the companies warehouse locations you could combine it with google maps API to see the location and track stock levels. We have some good ideas but I have even asked my Uncle who is a financial adviser his advice that might help a company. Hopefully we win show them what the University of Sunderland can do!

Movie Night: Minions!!! and Arabesque

Saturday, July 4th, 2015

Hello everyone, as part of my sister’s fiance’s birthday we decided to go eat local and watch a movie at the Empire Cinema in Sunderland.

Now I’ll admit the only times I’ve eaten out at University is usually on campus either at the cafe or Costa or something like that. This time we decided to try something new, across the Wearmouth Bridge and past the Nandos I have frequented a billion times is a golden door leading to a brilliantly themed Egyptian restaurant. Arabesque was great it was all different to me obviously apart from the Diet Pepsi lol. For starters we had the best ever chicken soup now as soup goes you wouldn’t think it would be that great but trust me it was strong and full of flavour and I’m a very fussy eater. I also recommend the mixed grill if you don’t know what you should order a great selection of mixed meats of different seasonings. And it was pretty cheap… go and support your local restaurants people!!!

Oh and students get a discount on Wednesday Evenings!

So after our lovely meal we had a little walk up the street to the Sunderland Empire, not to be mistaken with the theatre this is the cinema which has tickets for £3.25 on a Tuesday which is good but we went on a Wednesday a little bit disappointed as it wasn’t as good as the Odeon at the Metrocentre where we’d usually go but it was good for the price so no complaints. Anyways we went to see Minions… it was a great film and its a prequel to Despicable Me  which is also a great series… you can’t truly enjoy it unless there are loads of kids especially when one little boy decided to clap… that sold it for me ^.^ Worth seeing anyway so go and see it at the Empire because there was hundreds of seats to choose from.

1 Month To Go!

Saturday, July 4th, 2015

Yes people that’s right, I Scott Cowie, should be starting my placement at Accenture on the 10th of August and although I am looking for to it there are some things on my mind.

Firstly I have never done this kind of work before. University always felt like a relaxed atmosphere and I always tried to do great work and try to learn additional extras to what we were meant to do in assignments to further my knowledge but this is paid work and it will bring a new level of pressure to it. I’m sure it will be fine and I also wish good luck to the other students in my year that are going on to do a placement and even to those who are going to be doing their third year.

Secondly , with the placement being Monday to Friday I have decided that I want my weekend back and have decided to leave Sainsbury’s after nearly 7 years of service to reclaim my weekend. I have met a lot of interesting people and seen a lot of them come and go as the years went on and now it is my turn. I have learned a lot of skills from working there part time and it paid for my tuition fees so I really appreciate it now. Even though there have been times where I have thought why am I doing this or have gotten annoyed I appreciate everything I have done there and part of me will be sad to go. The other will be happy that it helped me move onto greater things.

Lastly I would like any helpful advice from you the readers as to how I should conduct myself  etc. I have asked my Professional Mentor about it but any other advice will be appreciated in any shape or form. Thanks for reading guys. Hopefully tomorrow I am going to try and do some research into API’s which the Hackathon is heavily based on and I will report to you my findings!

P.S for those keeping up to date on the blogs something weird has happened to the video link… it disappeared that is why this one is written. Hopefully I can give you a nice video update soon.
