Freshers Fayre and intuMetrocentre Student Lock-In 2014

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

Hey guys what a great day it has been to be a student, firstly we’ll cover the Freshers Fayre at Sunderland University over at City Campus although I was late to the party there were a lot of great groups and societies, a fun and lively atmosphere and a load of free stuff ranging from free drink and pizza coupons to memory sticks and sun glasses see below:

Free stuff please!

               Free stuff please!

It was open from 9:30 till 4 although it died right down by three (when all the free stuff was gone ha ha!) and it seen hundreds of students passing through from all walks of life including some none students…tut tut.

Busy at the Fayre

intuMetrocentre had a student lock-in today as well from 5-10 although we left at half 7 ish it was busy with students from all over and from different Universities and Colleges etc. Yet again though there were goodie bags to be had, the main one from intuMetrocentre themselves contained essentials for student life like a recipe book… beer and assorted household samples such as washing-up powder. When going to collect our wristbands we got given a free bottle opener (another essential) and movie poster we then followed onto the other stores and areas to collect up more free stuff like a small bottle of desperados and oddka… you can see what they think of students. There were lady garment store goodie bags from Boux Avenue and Anne Summers, the Boux Avenue one contained lip balm and a mirror etc, although to keep this clean I won’t mention what was in the Anne Summers one… but you can guess.

Freshers Fayre 2014

Freshers Fayre 2014

Hey everyone so this is my last freshers week blog as I work weekends part time and so I won’t able to attend anything else but I thought to wind up I would like to tell you about some other upcoming student events that you might be interested in. Firstly at City Space over City Campus there will be the Freshers Fayre next Wednesday (24th September 2014) these are always great as there are usually employers for part time student jobs and the different societies and groups come together, even I’ll be there from 2-4 ish for the student representatives table. Oh and yet again there’s  always loads of free stuff, last year there was pizza and memory sticks, free tickets and vouchers for different activities and stuff so get yourself down!

Hopefully everyone’s student finance will come in just in time for the other set of student events… the lock ins! This is the time  where you get “locked in” to places and you get huge discounts for being students up to 50% sometimes so you can get a new wardrobe or stationary etc. The first one is the same day as the Freshers Fayre but from 5-10 at the MetroCentre in Gateshead:

MetroCentre student lock in!

MetroCentre student lock in!

Then if you haven’t spent everything you have in one fell swoop then maybe you’d be interested in the one right here in Sunderland! The Bridges student lock in is on the 30th of September, although I know I can’t personally get to this one I will be in attendance at the MetroCentre one heading straight over after the Freshers Fayre but don’t forget to click on the links and register for your free entry to spend and get even more discounts!

Freshers Day 4: A real difference!

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

So following from yesterday we were out again with the sweets, spreading awareness of student reps and their role in student life. Funny side story though we ended up out with the iPad’s to do student surveys but originally earlier in the week we were supposed to be out with whiteboards. Purchased on Amazon from our student rep coordinator they finally arrived on the Tuesday but can you guess what arrived? Each whiteboard supposedly cost quite a bit yet they were merely white laminated bits of paper stuck to cardboard… Total joke but we had a laugh.

Anyway as I mentioned yesterday I was re-elected by our class along with previous rep Kieran Williams featured in Fresher Day 1, it was quite the election “who wants to do it?”… cue tumble weed so as you can imagine quite the fight. But for a simple explanation a student rep is there for you, the average student. Why you might ask? Well who knows the course better then the students taking it. For example last year we had an assignment which required us to use certain programs on our course but as we are using systems and a network which could potentially be dangerous we were not aloud access and the alternative? A small room with 6 computers in for 3 year groups to use and 2 of which were missing there hard drives and didn’t work.

So obviously I got in touch with our lecturer who just happened to be head of the faculty to complain and we managed to arrange for us to be able to use the big room with as many computers in as we would need to do the assignment with just a sign in sheet as the answer. Now it might not seem like a big deal but for us it went a great result for our 2nd assignment so although it may seem small it can mean the world of difference and therefore I suggest to anyone reading this blog to become a rep if the position is over as it gives you the power to make a difference and help the University give you your life changing course!

Oh……btw did I mention the added perks?  Everyone loves a free hoodie or free  vouchers, but for me personally, my favourite thing about repping was all of the study skills sessions that you can attend. From social networking, to leadership skills and how to make a change, there are great opportunities to really excel yourself and “get out there” more. They also appear on the transcripts of results which I think are an added bonus, because you bet employers will be asking about the role as a rep. Even though they were like an hour long each, I have really benefited from participating because I have grew as a person and “found” myself as an individual. (I’ve also become a lot more cheeky and outspoken haha!) ….oh and did I mention free stuff already? If your interested make sure to speak to your course leader and check out the student rep part of the union website found here!

Freshers Day 3: Back in the Game!

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

Well today was induction day and I was so glad to see the guys again and to see Simon Kendal our Program leader he is a total legend if you ever meet him you’ll laugh and he tells it exactly how it is! I am also proud to say that I am officially a student rep for our course again. Afterwards I decided to head over to my favourite feeding ground…Nandos:

Freshers Day 2: Free Toffees!

Tuesday, September 16th, 2014

Hey everyone so today me and Rebecca Raistrick were back on the streets to help the first year freshers who were lost and to spread awareness of the student rep role today however we ditched the horrid chocolate éclairs knock-offs for the assorted toffees. Here is a sneak clip taken by Rebecca of me trying to give away my free toffees:

I had also decided that I wanted to try and apply for the SuPA award this year as I was told that my first year I probably won’t have done enough to apply so I didn’t and better to try before third year when I’d be too busy! The SuPA award found hereis an additional award scheme which looks great on your C.V meant to show that you went above and beyond your course to show you had a real passion and really tried to get involved in your learning and employability skills, this is part of the Sunderland Futures Careers and Employability services which is located in the gateway.

So I had a meeting today with one of the advisor’s who gave me some great advice where to start looking for placements which I intend to do next year rather then doing the normal third year as I think it would be great for my employability I was also pointed towards the Professional Mentoring Scheme, and told to look at the Prospects website (Good job I was taking notes!). I’ll let you all know if I find out anything interesting or exciting so stay tuned!

Freshers Day 1: Afternoon Tea

Scott Cowie and Rebecca Raistrick

Scott Cowie and Rebecca Raistrick

Hey everyone recognize these two happy people? We were out today trying to promote the role of student representatives to be honest i think we made a better attempt at giving out free sweets and playing with our free yoyos from the puzzled help desk. Unfortunately due to not feeling 100% we had to pop home early but not before enjoying some Afternoon Tea in City Studio where i met up with a friend from my course one Kieran James Williams:
