About journalism, freelancing and… books

Saturday, April 27th, 2013

Sometimes I wish I had time to read more books. Every time I go to the library for a quick walk around, I end up carrying as many books as I physically manage to carry with me.

Recently, I took Journalism: a career handbook written by Anna McKane from the City library thinking what new can they tell for a person who has been studying journalism for the last 3 years?? But surprisingly, I found it interesting and useful. After each section, either it’s about freelancing,  graphic designers, online or B2B magazines, there are several profiles – interviews with people about their careers and how exactly did they get to where they are.

A lot of unknown writers or graduates tend to call themselves “freelance journalists” and a lot of the time it means – he or she was not yet lucky enough to get a proper staff job. Freelancing is great  but only when you choose it yourself, not because you don’t have any other choice. There are many freelances who didn’t choose it. They just are because they are struggling and there’s no other choice for them. Basically, only those who already have a reputation can take the most out of freelancing. Many others suggest it’s much better to start from a staff position, take the most out of it while you’re there, get contacts and only once you feel confident enough – it’s a good time to leave and be a freelance.

A must read if you’re interested in anything around print, online or news journalism or freelancing at all.

Video Update : April

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

Haven’t been blogging for a while – 3rd year at uni hit a lot! Literally in 3 weeks time I’ll be done with uni. That freaks me out sometimes when I think about it since I still have stuff to do.. but yeah, I’m nearly there and this is a video update of me telling things I’ve enjoyed the most – writing interviews for the magazine I’m producing.

Street performer @Trafalgar Square London video

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

I spend my last weekend in England’s capital just like I wanted. For the first time I wanted to forget and become distact to all my current stresses about finishing up my very last uni assignments, and some other issues I’ve been carrying with me for quite a while now and to get lost in enormously massive museums and galleries, in great and not that well-known lovely places and parks.

During my day-out, I filmed some parts of one hilarious street performance @ Trafalgar Square.  Most people found it entertaining, so did I. I really admire those people who are so much energetic and passionate about and who truly believe in what they do.
