Pharmacy at Sunderland?

Sunday, August 4th, 2013

Before I sign off i thought I would leave you with some interesting information about the fantastic University of Sunderland!!

students in labSunderland University was actually founded in 1901 as Sunderland technical college. The college started to introduce more programmes on offer as the years progressed in the hopes of being one day achieving university college status. Some 20 years later the Pharmacy school department opened, and grew to be one of the largest chemistry departments in the country!!

Hope Winch, born in 1894 can be considered as one of the most influential figures to have catapulted Pharmacy at Sunderland to where it is today. Hope Winch had an undeniable passion for pharmacy, and she initially started out as a pharmacy dispenser in Newcastle. She later went onto study pharmacy in London, however transferred to Sunderland Technical College on September 1st 1921 to work as a full time lecturer in all areas of pharmacy. This lead to a rapid increase in students over the years, and another lecturer was soon appointed to help with the intake of students in 1926. Hope’s love for education and knowledge in pharmacy was acknowledged as she was Secretary of the Local Pharmaceutical Society for 20 years and was Chairman up until her death.

We all owe so much to Hope, as she came to the North East with the goal of setting up the first pharmacy department.

Here at Sunderland, we have one of the largest alumni groups called the Hope Winch Society!! It is a free society to join when you become a pharmacy student at Sunderland, and its aim is to keep us students in touch when we graduate. Lots of events and evenings are held through this society, so that is another benefit of studying here!!

At Sunderland we are all SOOO proud of the history and how it has developed here over the past 100 years.

Summer and end of Lives online

Sunday, August 4th, 2013

Hey everyone..!!

Long time no post, I have been away since the middle of July and I have only found the time to update my blog now (even though it’s august!!) I have had the most AMAZING summer so far. After working really hard this past year I can say I have made up for all those times stuck to my books in the library. I’ve been working a lot this summer, finding both jobs in and out of the pharmacy. I didn’t take a placement with one of the large companies this year, however I will be applying again come september for my third year placement! I travelled recently with some of my friends to Monaco and Cannes, and I have been seeing all my wonderful friends for London that I will soon miss when I head back north again.

I am sooooo sad to be leaving LivesOnline! Although this summer my posts having been too busy, I have really enjoyed it. Especially answering everyone’s questions about Pharmacy!! If you are coming to Sunderland this September, or thinking of applying, do not hesitate in contacting me, I am always available to help!!
