Thoughts before university

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

You know that feeling when you’re sure that you’re in the right place, you need to go inside but there’s something that’s keeping you out? Something that’s making you walk past the building repeatedly, feigning a massive interest in a text that everyone passing by knows doesn’t exist. To be honest, I don’t know what that feeling is, or if it even has a name; I suppose you might call it nerves. Or you might even call it a fear of looking like a bit of an idiot if you walk into the wrong place.

Whatever it is, it happens, and I know already that it’s bound to happen in September. On that first day when you don’t know anybody and you’ve got to look like you know where you’re going to find this lecture theatre or that computer lab. I think this is the part I’m most worried about; the inexplicable awkwardness that comes hand in hand with doing something new; but I should take some solace in the fact that there’s a whole bunch of first years in exactly the same boat, all with that feeling that no one can describe. I can even be happy that if I do walk into the wrong place, I won’t be the first and I won’t be the last, so I can do it with my head held high… and my mobile phone out.
