The Nervous Wait For Degree Results

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Since leaving Sunderland at the back end of May it has been a busy five weeks of work back at my local leisure centre for me. I have thrown myself into the job, racking up as many hours as I can possibly cram in, so as to alleviate the boredom and numb the pain of the tediously excruciating wait for my degree results.

I’m pretty sure that this coming Monday (July 1st) is d-day but I’m so nervous about the outcome that I haven’t even checked to confirm that yet. Even just writing about it has given me that horrible butterfly feeling in the pit of my stomach! It is very difficult to put any thoughts about my final mark to the back of my mind because every time I check Facebook or Twitter somebody somewhere seems to be talking about their own results!

I haven’t got any plans to celebrate my results should everything go to plan because I’m working all week but I’ll certainly make up for that following graduation. For now though if I’m not working, I’m at the gym or out running, it seems I will do literally anything to avoid thinking about opening that brown envelope next week.

Fingers crossed, I’ll get the mark I’ve been hoping for…

The End Of Lectures

Sunday, May 12th, 2013

Last Friday was the final lecture of my time at the University of Sunderland, I’m still up here for a few more weeks yet though as there’s numerous deadlines still to be met. I cannot believe that three years has flown by so quickly, it is literally unbelievable!  (more…)

Sports Broadcast Reporting

Sunday, May 12th, 2013

I mentioned in a video blog recently that we had recorded a podcast as part of our ‘Sports Broadcast Reporting’ module and now that we have handed it in for marking I thought it’d be a good time to share it with you all. We recorded it over at St Peter’s campus in one of the radio studios and have had some good feedback from our tutor BBC, Sky Sports and STV reporter Dave Donaldson.

Broadcast Sports Reporting Portfolio Video

Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

I alluded to my Broadcast Sports Reporting Portfolio in my video diary earlier. Here is one of the pieces we’re submitting during which I am presenting, I’m not quite Gary Lineker yet I realise but it’s a lot bloody harder than it looks I can tell you!

He also has an autocue whereas I was working from my memory which is incredibly difficult!

I added the voiceover later in the edit suite and interviewed the winners courtside straight after the game. The reason the package looks as good as it does was nothing to do with me though! I had the easy jobs, we had people on camera, sound, script, editing and lighting to make the magic happen!

Anyway, take a look at what you could get up to should you choose Sunderland for your future!

The Final Straight

Monday, April 29th, 2013

As I write this there are only three and a half weeks remaining of my time at the University of Sunderland. I could use all of the cliches under the sun to describe how fast it has gone but I’ll refrain! I think I have something like six deadlines in these final few weeks and the pressure really is beginning to build.

The reassuring thing is that soon it will all be over and hopefully with a decent degree at the end of it, all of the hours spent in the library will prove to have been more than worth it! I still have no clue what I want to do after university, I was unsuccessful when interviewed for a job in Business Journalism back in March but that’s been my only sniff of employment thus far.

I think I will go back home and take stock of my life whilst continuing to work at my local leisure centre and hopefully something exciting will turn up for me.

For now it’s a good night’s sleep for me as they have been few and far between lately and I have no doubt that will continue to be the case for the foreseeable future! But hey, you only get out of a degree what you put into it!

My 2nd Week on The Independent Sports Desk (Part IIII)

Friday, February 15th, 2013

The penultimate day of my work experience on the Sports Desk, at The Independent, in London brought plenty of work on match previews for Saturday’s paper!

My 2nd Week on The Independent Sports Desk (Part III)

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Day three of my second week at the Independent was a little bit livelier than day two thankfully! There was plenty of talk in the office about the Madrid Vs Utd clash and I got stuck into more match previews.

My 2nd Week on The Independent Sports Desk (Part II)

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

My second day back at The Independent was another quiet one for me! It can be frustrating sometimes when you’ve not had much to do all day, but I’m still learning all the time, listening to what people have to say, and enjoying being surrounded by award winning journalists!

My 2nd Week on The Independent Sports Desk (Part I)

Monday, February 11th, 2013

I’m back in London again this week for my second stint on the sports desk of the Independent newspaper. As I did back in November, I will be providing a day by day video diary of my time inside Northcliffe House and updating you all on my progress.

This is the final week of compulsory work placement that I’ll be doing for my degree at the University of Sunderland, and hopefully it’ll provide another fascinating learning curve for me.
