Results Day 2014 – All the help you need!

So, it’s RESULTS DAY! Get the grades you wanted? Yes? No? Whatever the answer, there is plenty of help and advice out there. In this blog I have put together the very best links to help you take the next step. I have also written my own little bit, telling my story about how at first I didn’t go to University but took an alternative path. Check it all out below…

Before I decided to attend the University of Sunderland and qualify as an English teacher, I gained hands on experience straight out of college. I set up my own marketing business. On results day a few years ago this was my message:

Having ran my marketing business for a full year I learned lots and would encourage anyone wanting to study business to gain some hands on experience yourself by setting up your own business before even thinking about University, you learn so much more from getting out there and making mistakes than you do from a textbook.

This all being said, I did and am now in my 3rd year of a University degree. I have a direct path to become a qualified teacher and I am on a course that will almost guarantee a job upon graduation. I personally feel if you are going to do a degree, have an idea in your mind where you want to go with it and make a plan on how you’re going to do it! DON’T waste 3/4 years of your life having an epic social life for the cost of £9000/year…invest in yourself and think hard about what it is you want to do or try. The reality is, many people don’t know what they want to do and that is totally fine, however, try new things, take some risks and discover what it is that makes you want to get out of bed on a morning. University is a fantastic option if you know what you want to do and have a plan, but maybe if you’re not sure what that is yet, then take a year out, find yourself, go travelling, set up a business, DO SOMETHING that excites you, after all, you can always return to University later if need be.

“University choice should be based on a passion for the subject, a desire to get stuck into some in-depth learning or as a route for certain career paths, not because you “might as well go” because everyone else is.”  (Allaboutschoolleavers.co.uk, 2014)

I plan on using my degree and moreover my QTS status as a unique selling point when I re-enter the world of business. I want to help revolutionise the education industry and feel being a qualified teacher is a big step in the right direction.

I must add, if you want to go to University, don’t think twice about course fees. Yes they’re expensive, but we won’t pay them back for many years and when we do, we pay very small amounts each month in line with our salary.

If you have any questions about the path I have taken or any questions about your own future then feel free to comment on this blog or on my Lives Online Facebook page.
