coupled with the sun coming rapidly down it was a challenge !

So where to start a bit of an introduction I guess.

I’m originally from Dublin, Ireland. Growing up near the coast learning to sail was inevitable, something that I am looking forward to at Sunderland when the season begins.

Coming from a background in glass through my mother setting up a lampworking/glass bead making  studio in 2003, I was hooked on this new medium that I could eventually express myself with.

I spent  8 years learning all there is about lampworking yet there is still such a long way to go.

I took the leap in 2010 from originally studying for a BA(hons) in International business and Italian and escaped to a small town called Zwiesel, Germany to start my studies in Glass product design at their renowned Glass school.

Taking on many new skillsets especially in engraving glass and glassblowing I still figured I was limiting myself with the German methods of teaching sometimes lacking professional development.

I felt the need to travel somewhere else after Living in Germany for 16 months, 4 of those being snow covered !

I was told by an artist friend about the facilities available to study glass at the University of Sunderland while I was undertaking a summer internship at the Bildwerk artist community in Frauenau acting as a student artist liaison and translator.

My Portfolio application followed and was given a unconditional offer based on flying over for an interview, as if I could be prepared for the wonderful faculty that awaited me.

In my first year I was invited to join a stained glass restoration team  in the Cathedral Church of Christ in Lagos, Nigeria. 5 weeks of rewarding work followed !  The opportunities here are infinite its up to you if you want to take them on !

With the now new Hotshop “glassblowing studio” upgraded to electric furnaces and equipment coupled with the international acclaim of our Lecturers, Faculty tutors and dedicated technical team who work throughout Glass and Ceramics.

I can quite happily say that I am looking forward to what this year brings  and showing you all how  a career in glass or ceramics becomes a reality here !
