Placement Progress…

Tuesday, July 8th, 2014

I am currently on my second placement of the summer now, and it’s been a fantastic experience already. I’m really enjoying the challenges of hospital pharmacy and the variation that you come across from day to day, even if I am on the same wards two days running.

My medical rotation encompassed so many areas of pharmacy; including Cardiology, GI, Care of the Elderly, Respiratory, Palliative care, Oncology, Paediatrics, ITU, ECU, HDU, Stroke and Rehab units. Not only was I ward based but I was lucky enough to shadow on numerous care home visits, conduct medicines reviews and counsel patients on medications, including NMS, COPD care bundles and cardiac rehab medication (post-MI). I have learnt a whole new set of skills which I have adapted to suit the different wards I have been on, different members of staff I am working with, different patients I have been counselling, and different conditions that need attention.

I have certainly had my eyes opened to the sheer variation of hospital pharmacy – not only in the diseases treated and the clinical skill set needed, but in the variety of patients, families and situations I find in front of me. All is going well so far…!
