Copts In Need!

Monday, February 17th, 2014

Last night was the Annual Copts In Need Charity Dinner in Sunderland… and what a brilliant night it was!

A lot of my friends studying Pharmacy are Coptic, and they invited me to this event last year and this year, and both times have been fantastic and a huge amount of money was raised. There was a short presentation about how the money raised at these events so far have been spent by the charity, followed by a dinner at the Arab restaurant in Sunderland, Arabesque.

Over 100 people attended the dinner so hopefully a lot of money was raised to help this great cause.

What is Copts in Need and what do they do?

Copts In Need (CIN) started as a small group from the Coptic Orthodox Church in Newcastle, UK and now has members all over the UK. In January 2009, Copts in Need founding members were invited to join a charity based in Egypt, on their service to El Minia, a county in Upper Egypt. Having witnessed the extent of the poverty in the area and the great work done by this charity, they were inspired to create Copts in Need.

CIN is a non-profitable Charity. The fact that the charity is operating with volunteers means that all the donations received can go directly to helping some of the poorest and most vulnerable people on earth, men, women, the elderly, the infirmed and most importantly the children. They all have a human right to live with dignity and have hope for a bright future.

A brilliant night was had by all who attended, with a huge thank you to those who organised the evening; it was great.

So I went go-karting the other evening as a treat, and I absolutely loved it! I definitely need to go back again as it was so much fun, pretty close to Sunderland & plus, they do student deals too! Highly recommended. Anna.

Career’s fayre – number 2!

Saturday, February 8th, 2014

IMG_0983This second Career’s Fayre at University was all about Hospital Pharmacy and Pre-registration applications. There were numerous representatives there from the local hospitals, many of which were pre-registration pharmacists (AKA me in 2 years time, hopefully!)

It was great to be able to chat to students in a semi-formal setting, and still get lots of advice on applications and what to look for when choosing a pre-registration place. After all, I will only be able to apply to four hospitals for pre-registration year… so I want to make sure I pick the right place and the best programme for me. Each hospital offers a slightly different programme, but all of them underpin critical GPhC General Pharmaceutical Council standards and teachings… I just want to ensure that I pick the right hospital with the right people, teaching and support network for me!

Registrations open soon, but the application forms and references don’t need to be finalised until summer… so I’ve still got plenty of time to find out more about the local hospitals in the meantime!

Good luck to all other students looking to apply!

Careers Fayre – number 1!

Monday, February 3rd, 2014

In the summer between 3rd and 4th years at Pharmacy School, everyone applies for a pre-registration job…

… and that time is coming up for me (VERY quickly!)

1560514_220793511440217_1539362765_nThere was a Careers Fayre on for students in 3rd year where numerous employers and company representatives came to the Uni, and students had the chance to ask them questions, and find out more about their pre-registration programme. There were reps from the regional NHS hospitals (for hospital pharmacy), from big pharmaceutical companies, from high-street community pharmacies, from independent community pharmacies, and even reps from the Uni advertising CV support sessions and Interview technique sessions… everything we could possibly want to help with the up-coming applications!

It was a great opportunity and I am really looking forward to the second Careers Fayre coming up, all about the regional Hospital Pharmacy pre-registration programmes.
